A critical first test is the insulation resistance test. This test checks for the electrical insulation integrity between each phase and phase to earth/ground. A failed IRT means that this transformer is not safe to use.
Resistance of the transformer windings provides a measure of internal connection integrity. This test reveals mismatched connections, opens, and ›correct tap positions. Some transformers use tap changers to vary turn ratios by less than 1 %.
Measurement of the ratio between the primary turns and the secondary turns is an essential test of transformer health. Internal shorts and open connections can lead to incorrect turn ratios for the intended use.
The PI test measures insulation quality and provides valuable insights. It can show contaminated insulation and brittle-dry insulation even when the insulation resistance value is otherwise good.
A short-circuit impedance test identifies the impact on a transformer in operation from a mechanical force that deformed its windings. Outdoor transformers are subject to the elements and must be inspected at installation and periodically thereafter.
This test generates a magnetic field from the transformer and detects poor electrical connections, inter-turn shorts, gross core damage, and winding problems. It can also provide a mechanical assessment of the transformer.
